Guglionesi
| GUGLIONESI Guglionesi is one of the most important towns in Low Molise. For the visitor will be pleasure to discover such a view: from above a hill, in a landscape signed by the colours of cultivated fields, from the blue of the Adriatic sea to the horizon and the sweetness of the The most exciting part is that of the ancient medieval village, held by three main parallel streets and keeping some of the most interesting monuments in We suggest reaching the overlook situated in the higher part of Guglionesi, because it is one of the panoramic points in the region, from which it is possible to admire cornfields, the river Biferno’s waterway and the waters of Guardialfiera lake. Before your eyes you will see the pieces of land become famous thanks to the Molisan writer Francesco Jovine in the book: “The lands of the sacrament”. We are sure that you will take at least two photos!!!
To see St. Mary Major's Church The façade is elegant. It is subdivided into three doors which correspond to the three indoor naves: the central one is larger and has late baroque decorations. The inside part is very scenic and is embellished by stucco-works and capitals decorated with plant patterns. On the altar there is a beautiful altar piece dated back to 1572, which someone has recently ascribed to the The two very precious wooden triptychs were realized in the first years of the sixteenth century by Michele Greco da Lavelona. The first one is situated at the beginning of the nave on the left wall and represents a Madonna with Child between St. Rock and St. Sebastian. The second one is situated near the altar and represents a Madonna on the throne between St. Peter and A third triptych represents a Madonna with Child between St. Rock and Adam. Today it is in the National Museum of Abruzzo, but we suggest looking at the small reproduction kept in sacristy. An entrance in the right aisle allows to go in St. Adam’s crypt. The visitor will see a basement with three apses and a cross cover, held by little columns. In particular, the capitals are decorated with different plant and anthropomorphic patterns. Next to the crypt there is St. Adam’s chapel, patron of Guglionesi, whose memorabilia were carried to the town on a cart pulled by oxen in 1102. The vaults of the crypt and the chapel keep in part a series of frescos realized in 1587 portraying episodes of Genesis, realized according to the typical schemes of mannerism. The sinuous figures, the distorted perspective, the particular shades and the depiction of fruit and vegetables transmit a strong fascination to the visitor. You cannot miss it! Finally, on a wall of the chapel there is niche closed by “St. Adam’s doors” realized with a carved and gilt wood in the first middle of the eighteenth century. During the days of Patron feast (June 3rd) it hosts the silver reliquary-bust of 1886.
St. Nicolas Church The church structure dates back to the end of the 13th century. On the façade there are five blind small arches and four capitals, each one decorated with plant patterns. On the central arch of the entrance portal there is a lunette in which a lion, a griffin and a small bull head on top are sculpted. The rose window is simple and framed with white and grey stone blocks. The massive lateral walls are lightened with double blind small arches, calling to mind the façade pattern. The interior is divided in three naves and is characterized by the impressiveness of the pilasters and the groined arches. A steep staircase makes it possible to enter the chancel, which is raised because of the presence of a rectangular crypt with three naves and a cross vault sustained by short columns. On the lateral naves’ walls there are two paintings, one of them representing St. Nicholas and the other a Madonna among clouds and surrounded by angels. Small but strong. Simple but elegant. St. Nicholas Church in Guglionesi is one of the most important examples of Molise Romanic style.
