RICCIA

Riccia is the most important centre of the Fortore Valley, situated on the side of a hill, in a view signed by cornfields, olive groves and by the green of the beech, ash and cerris plantation, in Mazzocca area.

We suggest the visitor to go through the medieval historical centre and to reach, along narrow streets and steep stone-made stairs, the so called “Piano della Corte” area, with the imposing tower and the precious church of “Saint Mary of the Graces”.

Along the path one cannot miss the lions of the XIII century of the portal of Assunta’s Church, the façade of Annunziata’s Church, with one of the most beautiful portal of Molise, enriched with mullions and refined bas-relief works, some elegant windows and portals of private nineteenth-century-houses.

Inside the “Magazeno” -an ancient building of “Piano della Corte”- the Museum of the Arts and Folk Traditions collects ancient work tools and an exciting series of objects of the past.

To see

The tower of Riccia
The tower of Riccia, which has a suggestive circular form, is what is left of a medieval fortress with strong walls and an entry originally made up of a drawbridge, which is no more there today.

The origin of the castle is uncertain, but it was –of course- restructured in 1285, when Riccia became a feud belonging to Bartolomeo de Capua.

Then, in 1515, Bartolomeo III de Capua realized a series of defensive turrets and the moat.

In 1799, during the days of the Neapolitan Republic, the people of Riccia, in order to take revenge for the abuses of power perpetrated for centuries by various feudal lords, destroyed most of the castle, never more rebuilt.

The great tower, about 20 m. high, directly raises from the rock sheer above the Succida stream and it is composed by two parts, the upper cylindrical one and the lower scarp wall one.

The entry door is beautiful: it is surmounted by a Latin epigraph of 1515 ending with the sentence: “COME NEARER, IF YOU ARE A GUEST. RUN AWAY, IF YOU ARE AN ENEMY, IN ORDER NOT TO BE HIT BY JUPITER’S ANGER”.

Church of Saint Mary of the Graces

The church is one of the most important examples of the Renaissance architecture in Molise.

Originally a part of the building coincided with the crypt of St. John Baptist’s Church, that is no more there today.

Because of the closeness to Riccia Castle, it became the gentilitial chapel of de Capua family. In fact, the present building is the result of the restructuring works wanted by Bartolomeo III de Capua in the sixteenth century.

The façade is very simple and elegant and has two pilaster strips in Doric style on sides, a door with the coat of arms of de Capua family and an inscription dedicated to the Virgin Mary: “IN TE DOMINA SPES MEA" (In you, Our Lady, my hope). A niche on the door and a round- funnel-shaped window come before the elegant tympanum.

Inside the building, an arch divides the room in two parts. The back one has a groin ribbed vault with polygonal shape, rested on four different cubical and foliage-shaped capitals.

On the side walls there are family de Capua’s graves, in particular that of Costanza di Chiaromonte, repudiated by the king Ladislao d’Angiò in 1392 and later married to Andrea de Capua. In the middle, in the floor, there is the burial place of Bartolomeo III.

The stoup put in the wall is singular. It is made of a shell-shaped basin with three fish inside (symbol of the Trinity) and a demonic snake.
