ROCCAMANDOLFI
Amidst the mountains of Matese, at the feet of a Longobard castle ruins, this small town offers more than one reason to be visited.
By walking down the trails along the stream Callora, one has a chance to admire a steep faces gorge, dug by the stream waters, very abundant above all in wintertime.
In more than one spot the waters forms small wells, some of them kind of deep and do amazing leaps.
The small medieval town is a thick entangle of alleys and tiny houses, surrounding the St James Church. A little far from the church one can see the old measurements units for cereals made of planed stone and corresponding to the “tomolo”, the “mezzetto”, the “quarto” and the “misura”.
This town also keeps on of the most beautiful and ancient crosses of Molise, showing on one side Christ crucified, on the other Christ sitting on a throne in the gesture of blessing.
Past the upper part of the town, following a green trail, one reaches the castle.
The fortification has only some parts left which are the towers and the walls, recently partially restored. Its collocation on the rock kind of seems to be strategic, with two steep sides towards the valley and the remaining ones built on the rocky face diving on the stream Callora.
On the inside, after some partial excavations, other rooms have been identified, among which the Church of Santa Maria del Castello.
Leaving the castle, through a small mountain track you can reach another area of noticeable interest and natural regard: the natural plain surrounded by the woods of Campitello di Roccamandolfi. This an ideal starting point for hiking across Molise.
